Job Summary

This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer. The Regional Sales Manager will, as a trusted advisor, manage and grow customer accounts within an assigned geographic region. The Regional Sales Manager will also develop sales leads, pursue and close sales of Powell products within the assigned region and provide excellent customer service.

  • Manage existing customer accounts within a geographic territory:
    • Be point person to resolve issues with current equipment installations.
    • Identify opportunities and then sell upgrades and value adds to those installations.
    • Identify opportunities and then sell completely new systems.
  • Develop new customer accounts within a geographic territory:
    • Proactive: Prospecting, lead identification, needs assessments, solutions presentations, negotiating, gaining commitment, closing, and post-sales management.
    • Reactive: Follow-up promptly to new prospect inquiries by conducting needs assessments, solutions presentations, negotiating, gaining commitment, closing, and post-sales management.
  • As a trusted advisor, have ability to understand needs and communicate solutions at all customer levels:
    • CEO, President, General Manager
    • Engineering
    • Operations / Maintenance / Quality
    • Environmental Health & Safety
    • Purchasing
    • Marketing and Sales
  • Troubleshoot product performance issues and resolve customer questions and concerns.
  • Communicate with prospects, customers, and outside manufacturers’ reps and all internal Powell stakeholders on sales and technical issues and problem resolution and follow up as appropriate. 
  • Forecast opportunities on both a short-term (<1 year) and long-term (3-10 years) scale.
  • Prepare price quotations and submit proposal documentation.
  • Provide input and insights for development and implementation of marketing / sales initiatives.
  • Manage account activities through Powell’s CRM system.
  • Assist in development and implementation of marketing/sales initiatives.
  • Travel as required to participate in trade events, customer site visits, and prospect calls.
  • May assist in training new employees.
  • Support Powell’s U.S. Regional Sales manager network as needed.
  • Support Powell’s manufacturers’ rep network as needed, including product training, technical information, troubleshooting, quote preparation, and joint sales calls.
  • Follow Powell policies and procedures at all times.
  • Perform other related work as requested.

Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication: in-person, video, phone, email, presentation, and letter.
  • Passionately curious with questions to identify problems, opportunities, and offer appropriate solutions.
  • Excellent listening and note taking.
  • Ability to manage the technical sales process: prospecting, lead identification, needs assessment, solutions presentation, negotiating, gaining commitment, closing, and post-sales management.
  • Strong industry / market knowledge, positioning, trends: competitors, suppliers, customers, influencers.
  • Analytical, systematic, and thorough root problem identification and diagnoses.
  • Objection prevention and handling.
  • Strong solutions (products and services) knowledge, applications, and demonstration capabilities.
  • Strong aptitude of complex industry mechanical systems and processes.
  • Strong time management and ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Meet sales goals.
  • Up to 40% of time dedicated to overnight travel.
  • Proficient in MS-Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), managing clients / prospects in a CRM system.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline (e.g. engineering) or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in successful process equipment (e.g. pumps, valves, instruments, or complex chemical process systems) sales with an OEM, contract manufacturer, or distributor / manufacturers’ rep.
  • Proven track record of successfully increasing profitable process equipment sales at:
    • Existing assigned accounts.
    • New accounts through their own prospecting and development efforts.
  • Previous employment experience with a national / regional engineering firm a plus.
