Field Service Technician

Job Summary

This position reports to the Field Services Supervisor. The Field Service Technician will service, maintain, repair and install OEM chemical equipment. The position requires travel to customer sites (domestic and international), an ability to work independently, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Other responsibilities include assisting customers with troubleshooting, parts selection, instrument programming and calibration via phone, computer or at the customer’s site.

Essential Functions

  • Travel to customer site to inspect, calibrate, repair, and upgrade OEM equipment.
  • Learn and understand inorganic chemical processes to successfully program PLC’s including Allen Bradley, Siemens etc.
  • Build PLC electrical control panels and install with related equipment in the field (requires travel).
  • Write detailed service reports in regard to customer equipment condition. 
  • Troubleshoot and/or problem-solve OEM equipment at customer site or via telephone or computer. 
  • Request part numbers (PNRs) and engineering requests for action (RFAs).
  • Mark up project prints and obtain appropriate approvals. 
  • Commission and startup equipment, train customer personnel and assist with engineering review (requires travel).
  • Continually identify quality and cost effective modifications/improvements to equipment design and components which will increase profitability. Test alternative techniques and methods. Recommend changes in procedures or equipment as necessary.
  • Write technical maintenance bulletins. 
  • Locate unusual or specialized parts or components, new or used. 
  • Recommend and prepare price quotes for new and replacement parts.
  • Program instruments for use by customer.
  •  Repair instruments, valves, and pumps at customer site or in our Instrument Shop.
  •  Maintain company records in regard to customer programming and repairs.
  • Rebuild used components for use in variety of rebuilt equipment.
  •  Process RMA issues, receipts etc. as required.
  •  Request blueprint revisions based on job or customer specific updates.
  • Provide technical support for Sales Group, Materials Group and Project Managers.
  • Must always wear company approved safety equipment and notify supervisor of defective safety equipment when identified. Is responsible for ceasing work if defective safety equipment is evident.
  •  Rotate in 24/7 on call schedule with other employees.
  •  Assist other departments as requested or assigned. 
  • May assist in training new employees.
  •  Follow Powell policies and procedures at all times.

Qualifications

  • Courteous, efficient manner.
  • Self-motivated; ability to work without supervision.
  • Willing to travel (normally 3-4 days at a time and nearly always during the week) domestically and internationally.
  • Willing to accept new responsibility.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills and proper spoken and written grammar.
  • Aptitude for detail.
  • Ability to understand technical concepts/products. Able to operate a personal computer.
  • Must be able to walk, climb a ladder/stairs, stand, carry materials, stoop, kneel, bend at waist, lift and carry equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds for a significant distance, and move objects up to one hundred (100) pounds or more. Must be able to sit and drive for prolonged periods of time. Must demonstrate dexterity when working with tools. May work at heights for installation of equipment, and work in close quarters.

Education & Experience

  • Must have a minimum of a two-year technical degree or the equivalent experience in electrical instrumentation.
  •  Experience with PLC’s required (Allen Bradley, Siemens etc).
  •  Knowledge of and hands-on experience with industrial electrical and mechanical applications including the ability to read and understand schematic diagrams (blueprints, electrical diagrams).
  •  Knowledge of control loops and programmable logic controller (PLC) operations.
  • Experience with chemical processing equipment helpful.
